Lewis Williams

The public spaces of the city are where my photographs originate.
It is in these populated areas that people are immersed amidst buildings, streets and alleyways, which for many fade into everyday familiarity. In contrast to the familiar experience of the metropolis I seek the solitary: the personal as opposed to the public and the disparity between the masses and the individual. It is within the commonality of the urban environment that these photographed moments present metaphor: gesture, expression, pose and situation allegorise our individual existence and the seemingly banal becomes a eulogy of our survival in modernity.
